Original grantee
The Houston and Texas Central Railway began as the Galveston and Red River Railway chartered in 1848, then took the H&TC name in 1856 as its rails pushed from Houston toward the interior. By the early 1870s the line had reached Corsicana, Dallas, Denison, Austin, and Waco through linked rail projects. A Houston & Texas Central survey is therefore a corporate land-grant record from the period when Texas used acreage, certificates, and public aid to turn railroad construction into permanent transportation corridors and permanent county abstract names.
