The county
Big Lake (county seat) · plus Stiles (ghost town, original seat)
Created in 1903 from Tom Green County; named for U.S. Postmaster General John H. Reagan, the 'Old Roman' of Texas. The Santa Rita No. 1 well (drilled 1923 on University Lands in Reagan County) opened the Permian Basin and built the Permanent University Fund. The county still produces from the Spraberry/Wolfcamp.
